South Park Let’s Go Tower Defence Play
November 3, 2009 - South Park let’s go tower defence play, does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s South Park and it’s Tower Defence, perhaps two entities that shouldn’t necessarily go hand in hand, but in this instance it works.
I’m sure that nobody really needs the concept of the tower defence genre explained but for those that do.
Tower defence games see waves of enemies move through a playing field attempting to get to a certain point, in this case the town of South Park and destroy it. It’s up to you, in this case the cast of the show, to stop them enemies before they achieve their goal.
In most tower defence games you control a cursor and move around the map building ‘towers’ that defend your base, in South Park you control one of the characters and can flick between them as often as you like.
Starting with Stan and Cartman you learn the basics of the game and slowly unlock other cast members as you progress.
Fans of the show will be pleased to know that the biggest and best characters are included, from Jimmy to Timmy. Any of these characters can build the ‘towers’ used to fight the oncoming waves, said ‘towers’ include baseball pitching machines, lasers and cherry bomb throwers too.
The characters can each throw snowballs too, so at least when you leave the others standing around while you build, they’re still attacking.
Each tower costs money and money is dropped by enemies that you kill. It’s all a very simple premise, such is the genre of tower defence, but I have to admit that even though using South Park characters does ‘spice’ things up a bit, you’re still left with just another tower defence game.
There’s entertainment in the enemies you dispatch, underwear gnomes, ginger kids and hippies add that hint of humour needed, but after a time the game starts to feel vapid and empty.
As the game progresses, you’re presented with different situations which are generally grinworthy, but the story and voicework lacks the laugh out loud style of the show. As a huge fan of Trey and Matt I felt let down by the repetitive dialogue and use of old material.
Everyone wants to see a cameo in their games but this feels like a greatest hits reel made into an easy genre game. An addition that is enjoyable for fans is the ability to unlock clips of the show depending on the medal you win for your performance.
Although watching these back only makes it sadder that the game lacks so much original material.
As a game South Park is enjoyable, but can become a little tedious, particularly in later levels, where playing a level becomes more trial and error than forward thinking. This is where playing with friends can help the game, and lighten the mood.
Up to three friends can join you in fighting the enemy, they will take up control of other characters on screen, which helps to build more efficiently and allows you to take down the enemies a lot easier.
Switching from person to person in single player becomes a chore after time, so pulling in some friends is a welcome addition.
If you’re looking for a tower defence game with some humour then South Park Let’s Go Tower Defence Play is a good place to start, but there are much better tower defence games out there.
Even though there are recognisable characters, each with their own dialogue, special powers and charm, the whole game falls flat after time spent with it.
