Halo 3, Mythic Map Pack Review

February 28, 2009 -

Halo is back again with new additions to an already wildly popular online multiplayer mode. With the release of Halo Wars just around the corner Bungie is commemorating the event with the Mythic Map Pack a collection of three new multiplayer arenas to wage battle upon.

Bungie continues to deliver a rock solid multiplayer experience and these maps do little to change that fact. Consisting of three maps the Mythic Map Pack includes: Sandbox, Assembly, and Orbital. All three maps fit in with the Halo universe while also providing something new to the game.

Sandbox on its own is a simple arena matchup set in the dessert. Ruins are scattered about allowing for plenty of cover and areas of conflict. A number of vehicles are arranged including Warthog’s and Chopper’s. Sandbox is great for small to larger team games. Sandbox really shines when you modify it in Forge mode however.

Forge mode reveals that every object and structure within Sandbox can be edited or deleted. This allows for an infinite number of possibilities and effectively allows players to create their own maps. Not only is the ground level of Sandbox editable you can also teleport into the sky where you may begin creating an entirely unique map. Sandbox is most exciting because of these options.

Assembly provides a visually stunning background to matches. Set within the center of a Scarab production factory you will marvel as you watch the production line in action. The map itself is circular in shape and is best for Team Slayer or Deathmatch type modes although objective based games aren’t bad here either. The map is multi-tiered and converges in the center. Players should expect quick and heated encounters.

Finally the last map included, Orbital, takes place on a docking station as a part of the Quito Space Tether. The map is set up asymmetrically and has plenty of space to move around and of course fight. This map was great for One Bomb or objectives that are placed in a neutral location. What I most liked about the map was the number of ways you could move about. Stairs, Mongoose’s, and a small crawl space all exist.

All three maps include many of the weapons and equipment found within the rest of the game. The environments you see are based on concepts you have seen before: deserts, technology, and a space station. They do however give you a new look.

Halo 3 has been out since September 2007 and since then has continued to maintain a dedicated player base. The Mythic Map Pack adds solid content and is included within the Limited Edition version of Halo Wars or for 800 Microsoft Points sometime in spring.

If you continue to play Halo 3 with dedication then these maps are perhaps an obvious purchase. However if you are looking for something to bring you back to Halo 3 these maps are not your answer. The Mythic Map Pack should prove to be popular with many however as a wealth of new possibilities are opened up with the introduction of Sandbox.

There is no doubt that Halo 3 continues to be a powerhouse in online gaming. These maps will just add a new layer of content to an already solid experience.
