Little League World Series Baseball 2008 Review

September 1, 2008 - Game: Little League World Series Baseball 2008
System: Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS
Rated: E for Everyone
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Now Productions

Baseball Season continues to roll on and it appears as though Nintendo’s Wii console has caught baseball fever. Titles after title in this genre of gaming continue to pop up for the Nintendo Wii this year, and in this review we’ll be covering one of the latest: Little League World Series Baseball 2008.

Developed exclusively for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS, Little League World Series Baseball 2008 brings new and very innovative ways to play baseball on a gaming console. For the Nintendo DS while playing as your team’s pitcher you use the stylus to follow certain patterns that appear on the touch screen to successfully perform the pitch you chose to use. Follow the pattern successfully and you’ll have a very good chance of landing a strike, but if you make a mistake then it’ll most likely end up being a ball. While batting, you use the stylus to simply slide across the touch screen to make a swing. While it may sound simple a give you the impression that it might be a tad bit boring, it’s actually pretty addicting as well as fun.

Now for the Nintendo Wii the styles are very different of course. While pitching you use the Wii remote to do a series of different little steps to perform your pitches. For example, you might press the A button, turn the remote to the left, and then swing down. Or you might turn it in another direction and press a different button for a different type of pitch. There’s a variety of options to choose from for your pitches, and they’re very simple to perform and master. As the batter, you simply swing the Wii remote a little. The faster you swing it, the more powerful your swing will be. But the slower you do it, the more accuracy it will have. While it may be good to try and hit a homer, it’s sometimes better to simply go for the accuracy hits, and hit them in the right direction so it won’t be a pop fly out, and you’ll get some guys on base. When running, you shake the Wii remote to make your runner go faster.

So the gameplay is really fun. Just like a regular baseball game, but with its own unique twist that only the Nintendo Wii can deliver. The graphics are great as well. Crisp and nicely detailed, the stadiums, players and whole environment come out looking pretty good. And the sound came out well done as well. You hear all the things you’d expect to from a baseball game, and they all sound nice.

There’s a variety of different teams to choose from all based from different parts of the world, of course, or the option to design one to your own liking. And just like most sports games there’s a lot of replay value in this one. Whether you’re playing with some friends, or going through a tournament in single player, this game can keep you happy for quite a while. So there’s a lot of positive points to this game. It has fun gameplay with a unique twist in the Wii Remotes. The graphics and design are done very well. And the sound isn’t too shabby either. So with all the good, is there any bad?

Well, there is one thing I have to nag about. While it may not be too big a deal, some gamers might outright hate it. While it’s fun to use the Wii Remotes in this title, they’re basically all you can use. While a lot of Wii games give you the option to use the Nunchuck, classic Wii controller, or even an old Gamecube controller, this one unfortunately only allows you to use the Wii Remote. While it may not seem like a big deal, especially since most of the fun is had with the Wii Remote, I’m sure there might be a few times where you’ll feel a bit sick of twisting the controller around and swinging it around, and just want to use an old fashioned method with a regular controller. But sadly if you ever feel that way, you won’t be in luck with this title. Which is a shame, because it really if a fun game. But might not be desirable to those who like to stick to just using a basic controller. So that might bring sales down a little considering there are quite a few baseball titles out this year for the Wii, which do offer various controller options for those who are a bit picky.

So that concludes this review. While there may be a lot of positive points for this title, hopefully the one negative won’t push too many gamers away from giving this one a try.
