Who you gonna call?

When you’ve got pesky ghosts to catch, ‘who you gunna call?’… how about Spooky Spirits’ Becky and Tim? Together, Becky and Tim, the stars of Legendo’s Spooky Spirits, wander the spirit world—or make that ‘used to’ wander the spirit world.

After letting the Spookies escape, the brother and sister team must gather up all the loose ghosts in unique puzzle game very much in the vein of classic, Tetris. But just how fun is this game and is it worth your money?

The plot is minimal (as it should be), and the characters are merely used as a vessel to ease the player into the experience and to teach them the basic elements of the game. As an introduction it works perfectly. Every mode has a tutorial that explains the objective step-by-step, and a help menu is accessible at any point if you need some assistance mid-game.

So what can you expect to see in this creepy world?

Spooky Spirits consists of 3 games (where 2 play differently). You’ve got Panic mode, where the objective is reach a target score before the blocks rise to the roof. To prevent them from rising, you will be required to strategically drop coloured blocks into position (forming a chain if touching the same colour), and then use a Spooky block to destroy the chain.

The second mode—my personal favourite—is Puzzle mode, where you are restricted by how many moves you can make, and in order to beat the level you must clear every coloured block on the screen. A lot of strategy is required and this mode can be quite difficult, but it is both addicting and satisfying.

Lastly, you have Eternity mode and I’m pretty sure you can guess that it is Panic Mode—sans the target score. Trying to last long is a very difficult and demanding task, but those that manage will find themselves on the Eternity Mode Leaderboard (accessible from the main menu).

The music in Spooky Spirits is catchy, with my only complaint being that one sounds like an exact derivative of the Donkey Kong ‘Fail’ song. Overall my foot was tapping as I scratched my head and figured out how to tackle the ghoulies in this addicting puzzler.

Since this is a title on the iPhone, one thing that I will always look for is accessibility. I want a portable experience that is engaging and addicting, yet can be something that I can close within a moment’s notice and continue on with whatever I may be doing. Spooky Spirits perfects this; I feel compelled to boot the game up on Subway and bus rides, yet never have the hassle of having to reach a save point—as when you simply exit the game, an auto-save takes place and you can continue where you left off the next time you load up the app.

For a downloadable (and dirt-cheap) title, the amount of time one can spend in this game is immense! I’ve put nearly 5-6 hours into it and am nowhere near completion, and I’ve yet to grow bored of the experience! While I usually ramble in reviews, there’s not much to indulge into in terms of content within this title, so I will cut to the chase…

The controls are very intuitive and responsive making the game feel very polished. With cute characters, beautiful environments, interesting and addicting gameplay, catchy music and the low price of 2 dollars, if someone owns an iPhone and doesn’t pick up Spooky Spirits—well they’re doing themselves a disservice.

What are you waiting for? Go download this title and get to capturing those Spookies! If you choose to ignore my opinion and continue to avoid this game… well then ‘Boo’ to you. (And with that ghost joke I reach my score!)

Outstanding (An essential purchase)
